Clyde Edwards-Helaire is a 5 foot 7, 207 pound running back out of LSU. He was selected 32nd overall to the reigning Super Bowl champs, the Kansas City Chiefs. With this selection, the Chiefs received a lot of flack for taking a running back in the first round. Depending on your personal opinion Edwards-Helaire was seen by many as not being the top running back in this particular class.
That being said, Edwards-Helaire fits what Andy Reid and this Chief’s offense want in a running back. He has great vision and instincts to find gaps for chunks of yardage. He has incredible stop and start patience to find a gap that may take a little longer to develop, but once the holes are there he pounces on it. The Chiefs use a zone run scheme that requires good vision from the running back to be effective. With the elusiveness and vision that he possesses Edwards-Helaire will be productive in the run game alone. On top of his ball-carrying prowess, Edwards-Helaire provides another solid passing option for Mahomes on 3rd down.
In the Chiefs already high octane offense Edwards-Helaire provides a rushing threat that Andy Reid has not had since the departure of Kareem Hunt. With a running back that has the same tools as Hunt, but better developed, the Chiefs will be even more difficult to get off of the field with a good run game that will give teams problems.
